Whatever is true and beautiful is Catholic, and on the topic of creation science, many Protestants are in agreement with the Fathers and Doctors of the Catholic Church. Here are five science books by Protestant scientists that restore the traditional Catholic understanding of Creation.
Most if not all contemporary Catholic academic institutions, including seminaries, teach some version of “big bang” theory for creation, and evolution (or ”theistic evolution”) as the origin of life and the various species. This requires a rejection of the literal history of creation recorded in Genesis chapters 1-11. Such teaching, that the Holy Bible was wrong on this topic, opens the door to discussion of other possible “errors” in Scripture that “modern science” has supposedly now exposed – for example, the replacement of strict Biblical sexual mores with more relaxed “modern insights” from “modern psychology.” Such widespread substitution — of bad science for timeless true theology — perhaps came about because leading Catholic academicians “loved the praise of men more than the praise of God[1]” and wanted Catholic institutions to be respected by mainstream academicians. Modernists in the Church like to use the inaccurate pejorative term “fundamentalist” to demean those who believe the Biblical account of creation and the flood. They resort to such an ad hominem attack, rather than engaging in honest debate, because the latest scientific discoveries increasingly support the Genesis account. The Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation (www.kolbecenter.org) is a scholarly orthodox-Catholic lay organization seeking to refute the widespread modernist errors about creation. Their masterful articles and the DVD series Foundations Restored[2] should be studied by every Catholic who harbors doubts about Genesis as literal history. Kolbe Center theology on creation is soundly Catholic, and deserves regular support from any Catholic with alms to spare.
But there is also a larger Protestant organization, Creation Ministries International (CMI) (www.creation.com) producing a much larger array of elegant science books and DVD’s that masterfully refute modernist scientism (i.e. false science) with real science supporting traditional Catholic (Biblical) truth about creation. Although CMI staff profess a statement of faith[3] containing typical Protestant theological errors (e.g. sola scriptura, sola fide) — and an article on the CMI website supports the miraculous virginal conception of Christ but then denies the Immaculate Conception and the Perpetual Virginity of Mary[4] — CMI theology and science about creation is consistent with the ancient Church Fathers’ understanding of Genesis.
Whatever is true and beautiful is Catholic. Many of the greatest traditional hymns, those with well-crafted poetry filled with Catholic doctrine and set to time-tested reverent hymn tunes, were penned by Protestant writers: for example, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing or O God, or Our Help in Ages Past.[5] Even the music of the Lutheran master composer J.S. Bach has now found its way into the Catholic Church, because its beauty is Catholic. Evangelical Protestants — who believe their attenuated highly-poetic but unreliably-translated King James Bible (or certain newer versions) to be the inerrant word of God — nevertheless retain much traditional Catholic doctrine about origins, even while embracing various other theological errors based on incorrect interpretations of Scripture. But on the topic of creation science, such Protestants are in agreement with the Fathers and Doctors of the Catholic Church (whom they tend to accept, as long as they pre-dated the so-called “Reformation.”) In a time when many Catholics are losing the Faith in their teens or twenties due to the false “science” universally taught in middle and high schools and in colleges and universities, well-crafted scientific materials that support traditional Catholic doctrine on origins should be offered as corrective education. I have been highly impressed by the following set of five science books produced by CMI and available at www.creation.com:
- How Noah’s Flood Shaped Our Earth, by Michael J. Oard, M.S. and John K. Reed, Ph.D., 2017, 197 pages, large full-color softcover. Demonstrates that real contemporary science strongly supports a recent global flood and resulting geologic cataclysm, just thousands of years ago, and refutes the false theories of earth being millions or even billions of years old.
- How Noah’s Flood Caused a Single Ice Age, by Michael J. Oard, M.S., 2025, 236 pages, large full-color softcover. Demonstrates that real contemporary science strongly supports the geologic theory of a young earth, and a single ice age that occurred just thousands of years ago, as one consequence of a global flood and the resulting geologic cataclysm.
- Biblical Biology 101, by Robert W. Carter, Ph.D., 2024, 261 pages, large full-color softcover. Demonstrates that life is irreducibly complex, wonderfully designed, and cannot possibly have arisen through random chemical processes as the theory of evolution suggests.
- Biblical Geology 101, by Michael J. Oard, M.S. and Robert W. Carter Ph.D., 2021, 200 pages, large full-color softcover. Demonstrates that the observed geological formations on earth are much better explained by a recent global flood and cataclysm, than by the mainstream false-science theories of gradual geological processes operating over millions or billions of years.
- Genetic Entropy, 4th Edition, by John C. Sanford, Ph.D., 2014, 271 pages, softcover. A Cornell University genetics professor for 30 years, Dr. Sanford demonstrates that after the fall of man, DNA copying errors in each successive generation caused a classic biological decay curve exactly matching the rapid decline in human life spans (from almost 1000 years to about 70 years) recorded in Genesis; and furthermore, that the human genome is rapidly de-volving toward extinction, possibly in less than a thousand more years. Mutations have never caused any significant biological improvements, but instead prove that the overall duration of the human race (beginning with the curse due to Adam’s fall) must be limited to thousands, not millions, of years. Cumulative mutations are also the main cause of progressive aging in individuals.
Theological errors in these Protestant-authored books on creation science seem to be either absent or minimal (mainly limited to some CMI-published articles referenced in footnotes.) Real science has NOT proven that the earth is more than thousands of years old, or that life arose and developed through random natural processes. On the contrary, the more that honest Christian scientists discover, the more likely it seems that the Genesis account of recent creation and a global flood, just thousands of years ago, is real history. If you have the opportunity to reach out to Catholic young people or adults who are being terribly mis-educated by the faith-destroying false “science” of “big bang” theory and “theistic evolution,” one or more of the above five science books may help to open their eyes to the fact that they have been deceived, and that the timeless teaching of the Church Fathers on creation remains sound doctrine increasingly supported by contemporary sound science.
