Why the Church’s Future Depends on Priests Formed in the Sacred Heart of Jesus

As Catholics celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we are reminded that the priesthood itself flows from the pierced Heart of Christ. In an age of confusion and crisis, the Church's renewal depends not on programs or strategies, but on holy priests formed in the Divine charity of the Sacred Heart.

In every genuine Catholic vocation, there is a  mystery of love that surpasses worldly understanding and computations. Strikingly, in the Catholic priesthood, this mystery of love attains a special height, as God calls the priest to not solely speak of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings, but to stand in Christ’s place at the altar (alter Christus), to minister in Christ’s name, and to instruct and shepherd souls in the Divine charity that flows from the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Contrary to what some may believe (especially in the years following Vatican II), the Catholic priest is not an employee of the Church, nor a community facilitator, nor a spokesman charismatically entertaining assemblies of Catholics gathered on Sundays to worship God.

The future of the Church will not be secured by fashionable trends or charismatic personalities, but by authentic and pious Catholic priests.

Instead, the Catholic priest is a man ordained to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to absolve sins in the Sacrament of Confession, to administer Extreme Unction and to give the Apostolic Blessing of the Church to the dying, as well as to preach the immutable and unadulterated truth in season and out of season. In a faithful Catholic priest, we witness on one hand  the mercy and compassion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. On the other hand, we also see the authority and firmness of Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, in a holy Catholic priest.

The priest exists for the Catholic faithful entrusted to him, and his life finds its meaning in self-gift and sacrifice for his flock, just like how Our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to lay down His life for His sheep as the Good Shepherd.

Traditionally, solid priestly formation has never been regarded as a matter of limited or little importance by Holy Mother Church.

If the priest is to be another Christ, he must be formed in close imitation of Christ Himself. Wholesome priestly formation must be premised on solid doctrinal, spiritual, moral, and liturgical grounds based on the perennial teachings of the Catholic Church. Fruitful priestly formation must instruct young men how to pray and unite themselves with Our Lord before it teaches them how to preach. Robust priestly formation must crucially teach young men the significance of the Holy Sacrifice of Calvary, the role of the priest as a “bridge” between God and man, as well as how to sacrifice their wills for the sake of the eternal truths they have pledged to uphold and transmit. Without solid priestly formation based on a proper understanding of the · raison d’être of the Catholic priesthood, the latter would become hollow and fail to become a vessel transmitting grace through the Sacraments to the faithful.

A priest must be conformed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus if he is to become a true father and shepherd of souls.

In our chaotic times when doctrinal ambiguity, liturgical abuses, and moral confusion plague the human elements of Holy Mother Church , the witness of the traditional Catholic priesthood glistens with a lucidity that faithful Catholics instinctively can identify and acknowledge. Such clarity is the clarity of self-sacrifice, reverence, obedience to Catholic doctrine, missionary zeal, and love poured out for the salvation of souls, as the highest Church law states: “Salus Animarum Suprema Lex”.

In view of the sublime vocation of the Catholic priest, strong Catholic priestly formation requires a deep-seated and ardent devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

After all, this devotion contains the very essence of Catholic faith, namely, God’s burning and unquenchable love for mankind. The Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, has been gravely offended by men’s sins, yet it never tires of welcoming repentant sinners back to His bosom.

Moreover, this loving Heart is not merely symbolic in a sentimental sense. Instead, it is the living Heart of the Incarnate Word, disclosing the divine logic of the priesthood and God’s salvific plan for mankind. Thus, a priest has to be conformed and united to the Divine Heart of Jesus if he is to be a true father and shepherd of souls. He must learn to give,, to suffer, to forgive, and to remain at the service of souls even when he is misunderstood, scorned, or overwhelmed by the demands of a world that no longer appreciates the Catholic priesthood or even understands what it is.

With these truths in mind, the new documentary series produced by the Society of St. Pius X(SSPX), TRADITIO, is so timely and noteworthy.

Catholics who love the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and who wish to remain faithful to perennial Catholic doctrine and liturgy handed down from the time of the Apostles through the centuries can draw many benefits from this documentary series.

By showcasing the rationale of the Catholic priesthood, the history of the SSPX, as well as priestly formation in the various international seminaries of the SSPX ,the first part of the documentary series, titled “A Work of Faith”, the documentary divulges that priestly formation necessitates discipline, continuity, and an unwavering orientation toward the supernatural end of man, that is, to know, love, and serve God on this earth, so as to be happy forever with Him in heaven (Baltimore Catechism).

The prayer of the hour is simple: Lord, give us holy priests. Give us bishops after Your own Heart.

The title of the first documentary itself, “A Work of Faith”, is appropriate to describe the gist of the Catholic priesthood, for the latter is truly a work of faith, as it does not stem from human ambition alone.

Rather, a priestly vocation is nourished by grace, prayers, self-surrender, and faithful Catholic doctrine and formation. Young men who enter the seminary are not undertaking an internship or apprenticeship, but instead are entering a crucible in order to die to themselves so that Our Lord Jesus Christ may live more fully in them. Hence, a priestly vocation is not for the faint-hearted, as it is a demanding one. Nonetheless, this vocation is also a meaningful and beautiful one to lead souls to God amid the humdrum and tumultuousness of the world.

The future of the Church will not be guaranteed by fashionable trends, charismatic speakers, and ideologies, but by authentic and pious Catholic priests. Priests who believe what the Church has always taught, celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass just as how the Church has always done so for centuries, as well as thirst for souls just as how Our Lord Himself did will play a major role in restoring the suffering Church of Christ from its Passion (at the moment) to its glory.

Again, in a time of massive confusion both in the Catholic Church and in the world, the very notion of the Catholic episcopacy once again be contemplated in light of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart is the model not only of priests, but of bishops as well. In the pierced Heart of Jesus, we see what spiritual authority must become: not domination, but service; not self-assertion, but self-sacrifice; not ideological performance pandering to political pressures, but steadfast fidelity to Catholic doctrine in a spirit of true Christian charity. The Catholic Church  needs shepherds who can contemplate the wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ and who are willing to remain at the foot of the Cross for the sake of their sheep. Admittedly, the best priests and bishops are those who are willing to lose worldly favor and to combat the wolves, so as to preserve eternal truths and ensure the salvation of the souls entrusted to their care.

All in all, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the answer to any travail that the vocation of priesthood may entail.Priests  tempted by tepidity and discouragement can find in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus a burning love for mankind and an unshakeable hope in God. Young men wavering in fear in face of God’s call to the priesthood can find in the Sacred Heart of Jesus a reminder that God is never outdone in His generosity. It can be said that the Catholic priesthood is a precious gift of that adorable Heart of Jesus, aflame with love for His creatures, and the immense crisis presently embroiling Holy Mother Church will only be diffused when Catholic priests once more take the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as their model, in order to be, sacrificial, doctrinal, reverent, and devoured by love of souls.

Whatever one’s individual evaluations of current canonical tensions between the Vatican and the SSPX, or the impending SSPX bishop consecrations in Écône on July 1, 2026 may be, the true prayer of the hour is simple: Lord, give us holy priests. Give us bishops after Your own Heart. For ultimately, the Catholic Church would not be restored by mere human strategy, but by sanctity; not by passing fashion,or ideological fads, but by the eternal fire of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Regina Cleri, ora pro nobis.
