PAPROCKI v. SSPX: The Price of ‘Full Communion’ in the Synodal Church

In this episode of The Remnant Underground, Michael Matt uses Bishop Thomas Paprocki's recent statement on the SSPX as Exhibit A to expose the real crisis facing Catholics today. Michael argues that the Society itself is not the issue. The Revolution is. And Bishop Paprocki's comments unintentionally reveal exactly why so many Catholics believe the Church is living through a genuine state of emergency.

His Excellency, Bishop Thomas Paprocki, says the SSPX is just another Protestant sect. Is that true? If so, what is the price of full communion in the Church?

Now, Bishop Paprocki is not a bad bishop. In fact, his refusal to go along with the homo-synodal agenda means he is ideologically closer to the SSPX bishops than he is to Cardinal Cupich and the Gang (which is why Michael Matt invites Bishop Paprocki to the CIC).

So, is the SSPX really the problem—or is it simply refusing to surrender to the Revolution transforming the Catholic Church?

In this episode of The Remnant Underground, Michael Matt argues that the central issue here isn’t the Society of St. Pius X at all. The real crisis is a Church where bishops openly contradict one another on questions of faith, morals, liturgy, and discipline, while remaining united only in condemning the SSPX. For example:

Some bishops bless same-sex couples. Others oppose those blessings.

Some suppress the Traditional Latin Mass. Others continue celebrating it.

Some preach perennial Catholic doctrine. Others openly promote Synodality’s new heterodox agenda.

So where is a Catholic supposed to turn?

Rather than placing ultimate trust in conflicting hierarchs, the SSPX argues that Catholics must cling first to the infallible, perennial teachings of the Church—a position Michael contends deserves to be understood before it is condemned.

This episode explores:

  • Why the Church is experiencing a genuine state of emergency
  • The contradiction between Latin Mass suppression and Synodal inclusivity
  • Bishop Paprocki, Cardinal Cupich, and today’s divided episcopate
  • The legacy of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre
  • Why the real battle is against Modernism—not fellow Catholics
  • What history teaches from the age of St. Athanasius

Whether you agree or disagree with the SSPX, this discussion asks an unavoidable question:

When bishops contradict bishops, where does authentic Catholic obedience begin and end?
