Bishop Michael Martin’s move to remove altar rails throughout his Diocese of Charlotte, taking effect from the first Sunday of Advent 2025, has ruffled the feathers of many faithful Catholics worldwide. This move, together with his wider and notorious crackdown on the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), marks a decisive liturgical and symbolic rupture from the reverence that has characterized Catholic worship for centuries as well as the atmosphere of many parishes in the Charlotte diocese.
Strikingly, Bishop Martin’s stance is yet another recent example of disturbing trends happening within Holy Mother Church, including the recent Vatican publication of controversial Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández’s “”Mater Populi Fidelis,”” perceived by many faithful Catholics as an effort to downplay the importance of the Blessed Virgin Mary in God’s salvific plan, so as pander to Protestant heretics and ecumenical ideologues.
At the crux of the Charlotte diocese drama surrounding the elimination of altar rails lies underlying theological questions of how Catholics should regard the sacred mystery of the True Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
Bishop Martin’s instructions to remove altar rails throughout his diocese cannot be evaluated in isolation. Rather, his move accompanies his recent liturgical crackdown on the TLM in the diocese.
For centuries, altar rails in Roman Catholic churches have acted as definite physical barriers distinguishing the sanctuary—the holiest part of the church where the Tabernacle containing the True Presence lies and where the Catholic priest stands in persona Christi—from profane spaces in the church, such as the pews occupied by lay people.
Strikingly, these rails are not solely architectural barriers, but symbolic reminders to create the requisite spiritual “distances” for faithful Catholic worshippers to encounter and adore Our Lord Jesus Christ truly present in the Holy Eucharist.
Notably, Bishop Martin’s instructions to remove altar rails throughout his diocese cannot be evaluated in isolation. Rather, his move accompanies his recent liturgical crackdown on the TLM in the diocese, limiting the Holy Sacrifice to a single chapel located a considerable distance for many parishioners, repressing ad orientem worship, and doing away with traditional vestments and prayers. All in all, Bishop Martin’s policies reflect an expedited and calculated break away from doctrinal orthodoxy and liturgical reverence towards the compromised modernist approach that emphasizes communal “feel-good” convenience an “liturgical uniformity”.
The distasteful Charlotte drama brought about by Bishop Martin would have made and remained on the headlines of many conservative Catholic media outlets for a long time, if not for the Vatican’s very own contentious actions that seem to be endorsing (tacitly) Bishop Martin’s own actions.
Already, much ink has been spilled over Cardinal Fernández ‘s contentious document “”Mater Populi Fidelis” that appears to gloss over the Blessed Virgin Mary’s singular and unique role in God’s plan for mankind’s salvation to cater to the concerns of Protestants and “separated brethren”. The document, while appearing to start off with beautiful descriptions about the Blessed Virgin Mary, nevertheless comes to a rather pathetic and anti-climactic end that simply captures the false conclusion:
“Because Mary’s title as ‘Co-Redemptrix’ is difficult to explain, it is ‘always inappropriate’ to refer to Our Lady as ‘Co-Redemptrix’.”
Keeping communication lines open to Protestants (and other heretics) to convert them to the one, true Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ must certainly not come at the expense of authentic Catholic teaching. Simply put, the Blessed Virgin Mary’s indispensable and exalted role as Mediatrix of all Graces must never be denied nor downplayed in the quest for “unity” with Protestants. Our Lady must never be conveniently chucked in a corner in order to strike up conversations with heretics, schismatics, and those outside the True Faith. Also, our Catholic identity and beliefs must not be dictated by those outside the True Faith who have absolutely no right to choose what we as Catholics should or should not believe.
In light of the Vatican’s move to nix the title of Mary as “Co-Redemptrix”, Bishop Martin’s removal of altar rails to perhaps kowtow to false Protestant notions about the True Presence can be interpreted as the liturgical counterpart to the Vatican’s theological “”watering down”” of Our Lady’s eminent and unique role in the salvation of souls.
Just as removing the rail removes the protective and reverent barrier between the sacred sanctuary and the congregation, downplaying the august Mother of God eradicates a necessary “fortress” of truth and devotion that distinguishes the True Faith from other false Protestant confessions.
Both actions seem driven by the same ecumenical motivations: to exterminate what could be a hindrance or offense to the Catholic Church’s “separated brethren” or secular sensibilities, in the illusion that “unity” might be established by reducing doctrinal “”divides.””
However, the Church as the Bride of Our Lord Jesus Christ is called to reflect Him, who is a “sign of contradiction” and a “stumbling block” to His enemies, and not to compromisingly dilute His teachings under the banner of human fraternity. Just as doing away with altar rails risks encouraging irreverence and indifference towards the True Presence in the Eucharist, minimizing Marian devotion and doctrines would impoverish the fullness of the Gospel and undermine Catholics’ spiritual lives. After all Our Lady, the Virgin Most Faithful, Destroyer of Heresies, Queen of Confessors, is a sure bulwark against the enemies of Her Divine Son. As the best of all mothers, it is in the Blessed Virgin Mary’s very interests to safeguard the Catholic Church founded by Her Divine Son and ransomed at the price of His Precious Blood.
The misguided and worrying liturgical and Marian minimalism adopted by Bishop Martin and Cardinal Fernandez is a stark wake-up call for all Catholics to renew their love and advocacy for what is holy and sacred in our religion, such the indisputable dogma of the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Importantly so, Catholics should re-double our efforts to love the Blessed Virgin Mary and realize that Marian devotion is fundamental to authentic Catholic spirituality and Church unity, for Our Lady is truly the Mother of the Church (“Mater Ecclesiae”) and Mother most amiable (“Mater amabilis”). Only then can Catholics continue persevering and keeping up the good fight to fend off the “Church of Human Fraternity” in order to establish the true and all-encompassing reign of Christ the King.
Maria, Mater Ecclesiae, ora pro nobis.
