The hawks in Europe are rearing their ugly heads again

As realistic and pro-peace factions in Europe continue to push for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, the war hawks among the European elites are showing their true colors, touting increased rearmament as a virtue. Perhaps the pro-war jokers have arrived at the conclusion that increased defense spending is more economically profitable than a commitment to woke ideology and Net Zero.

As Donald Trump’s recent actions towards Ukraine continue to make headlines in both legacy and independent media worldwide, France’s President Emmanuel Macron has not stopped short of displaying his hawkish antics.

In a televised speech to the French nation right before this week’s emergency European Council (EC)  summit in Brussels, Macron urged for a “strategic debate” on expanding France’s nuclear umbrella over Europe.

After giving his audience a brief overview about present bilateral ties between Europe and the United States (US), the French leader declared:

“The United States of America, our ally, has changed its position on this war, supporting Ukraine less and leaving doubt about what comes next.”

Moreover, Macron alleged that it was necessary that Europe continue to back the Kyiv regime under authoritarian leader Volodymyr Zelensky , claiming that “Russia has become, today and for a long time, a threat to France and to Europe.”

Adding, the French leader said

“Russia, under President Putin, is violating our borders to assassinate opponents, manipulating elections in Romania and Moldova, organising cyberattacks against our hospitals to disrupt their operations, attempting to manipulate our opinions with lies spread on social media, and, at its core, testing our limits.”

Predictably, Moscow reacted to Macron’s declarations with distaste.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that Macron’s comments indicated that Paris was bent on prolonging the long-drawn Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

“This (speech) is, of course, a threat against Russia,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asserted, in remarks cited by Reuters.

“Unlike their predecessors, who also wanted to fight against Russia, Napoleon, Hitler, Mr Macron does not act very gracefully, because at least they said it bluntly: ‘We must conquer Russia, we must defeat Russia’.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that Macron’s comments indicated that Paris was bent on prolonging the long-drawn Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

“The speech was indeed extremely confrontational. It could hardly be perceived as a speech by a leader who was thinking about peace,” Peskov stated.

Additionally, Macron had glossed over Russia’s own “legitimate concerns and fears” regarding NATO’s eastward expansion towards Russia’s own borders, Peskov continued

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, pejoratively labelled the French leader as “Micron”, dismissing his statements.

“Micron himself poses no big threat though. He’ll disappear forever no later than May 14, 2027. And he won’t be missed,” Medvedev penned on X, alluding to the end of Macron’s term.

Also, Macron most likely failed in his attempt to convince Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán  in a prior meeting not to veto the EC’s plan to prolong European Union (EU) military aid for Ukraine in lieu of peace talks.

What is more, Macron hitherto admitted to  Portuguese TV RTP that he was willing “to open this discussion … if it allows us to build a European force.”

Strikingly, Macron was not alone in his views.

Earlier, Friedrich Merz, chairman of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the incoming German chancellor, broached the notion that other countries contemplate bearing Europe’s defense responsibilities.

“We need to have discussions with both the British and the French – the two European nuclear powers – about whether nuclear sharing, or at least nuclear security from the UK and France, would apply to us,” Merz stated.

With Trump’s America apparently tapering off in its support for the Kyiv regime, Ukraine has become primarily Europe’s war, according to the Brussels elites, including the unelected European Commission queen, Ursula von der Leyen.

Never mind that the EU does not have the necessary funds to keep Kyiv afloat. Never mind that von der Leyen wants the EU to have a ginormous military budget that is based on debt . Never mind that such actions might further ruffle Moscow’s feathers, escalating regional and international tensions. Only the out-of-touch Brussels brahmins and their sycophants would want to support this unsustainable model.

During a special meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on March 6, the “REARM Europe” plan put forth by the EU Commission was unveiled. Notably, this plan hopes to generate around €800 billion over the next four years, most of which will hail from EU member states boosting their national spending on defence, as per Euronews.

“If member states would increase their defence spending by 1.5% of GDP on average (which is the cap established by the Commission in additional defence spending per year), this could create fiscal space of close to €650 billion over a period of four years,” von der Leyen told reporters, in remarks cited by Euronews.

“We’re talking about [funding] pan-European capabilities domains like for example, air and missile defence, the artillery systems, missiles and ammunition, drones and anti-drone systems, but also to address other needs from cyber to military mobility,” von der Leyen elaborated.

Again, as realistic and pro-peace factions in Europe (e.g. Hungary)  continue to push for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, the war hawks among the European elites are showing their true colors, touting increased rearmament as a virtue. Perhaps the pro-war jokers have arrived at the conclusion that increased defense spending is more economically profitable than a commitment to woke ideology and Net Zero.
