Rome’s Persecution of the Traditional Latin Mass is the Most Important Sign in the World Today

As Michael Matt highlighted in his recent Remnant Underground, tyrannical governments have occasionally banned the Traditional Latin Mass because they have hated the immutable Catholic Faith it embodies. The Church has always presented for our imitation the saintly examples of those Catholics who have risked their liberty, and even lives, to preserve the Mass in the face of such persecution. Today, however, those purporting to be the Catholic hierarchy in Rome have given us an unmistakable sign of the diabolically disoriented times: they are attempting to do more to outlaw the Traditional Latin Mass than tyrannical governments have ever been able to do.

As informed Catholics appreciate, the banning of the Mass would not be such a sign of profoundly evil disorder were it not for St. Pius V’s 1570 Apostolic Constitution, Quo Primum, which made it unambiguously clear that — “henceforth, now, and forever, throughout all the provinces of the Christian world” — the Traditional Latin Mass was to be the only approved form other than those rites which had already been in long use:

“This new rite alone is to be used unless approval of the practice of saying Mass differently was given at the very time of the institution and confirmation of the church by Apostolic See at least 200 years ago, or unless there has prevailed a custom of a similar kind which has been continuously followed for a period of not less than 200 years, in which most cases We in no wise rescind their above-mentioned prerogative or custom.”

St. Pius V had not devised a “new rite” but had instead embarked on a laborious process of studying and codifying what had been in place for centuries:

“We decided to entrust this work to learned men of our selection. They very carefully collated all their work with the ancient codices in Our Vatican Library and with reliable, preserved or emended codices from elsewhere. Besides this, these men consulted the works of ancient and approved authors concerning the same sacred rites; and thus they have restored the Missal itself to the original form and rite of the holy Fathers.”

Why does the most evil group of people ever assembled have such disproportionate fear and loathing of those who simply believe what the Church has always taught?

When forced to choose between this holy and ancient Traditional Latin Mass which has nurtured the saints on the one hand, and the ever-changing and perpetually irreverent Novus Ordo Missae which gives us apostates on the other, what will sane Catholics choose? What would all the saints choose?

We know, of course, that the authorities in Rome have sought to ban the Traditional Latin Mass because they believe it stands in the way of the “reforms” promulgated by Vatican II. Ironically, though, the most salient initiatives flowing from the Council ought to cause its proponents to enthusiastically encourage faithful Catholics to adhere to the Traditional Latin Mass. After all, it is the Council that places such great emphasis on religious liberty and the need for individuals to follow their consciences. Moreover, the dominant theme of ecumenism demands respect for all religious beliefs and practices, especially those which are Christian. Why, then, do these innovators object to Catholics exercising religious liberty to follow their consciences in a way which appears to fall within the category of acceptable Christian beliefs?

The answer has been clear for over fifty years: the innovators know that the integral Catholic Faith embodied by the Traditional Latin Mass does indeed pose an obstacle along their “irreversible” path of false ecumenism. In his Ecumenism in the Liturgical Reform, Fr. Grégoire Celier quoted Annibale Bugnini’s words about the need to remove these obstacles from the Church’s liturgy:

“It is always difficult to have to tamper with venerable texts that have nourished Christian piety so effectively for centuries, and which even today bear the spiritual odor of the heroic times of the primitive Church. . . Nevertheless, we have considered it necessary to confront this task so that the Church’s prayer may not be a source of spiritual distress for anyone. . . In making these difficult sacrifices, the Church has been guided by love of souls and the desire to do everything to smooth the way to union for our separated brethren, by removing any stone that could constitute even the shadow of a risk of stumbling or displeasure.” (p. 25)

This admission from the primary architect of the Novus Ordo Missae merely confirms what is abundantly clear to those who have compared Paul VI’s Mass to the one which St. Pius V ensured us could never be abrogated. They had to dispose of the Traditional Latin Mass because it displeased non-Catholics.

Francis relentlessly pursues an anti-Catholic agenda to crush the most potent opposition to the Great Reset.

As Michael Matt mentioned in his Remnant Underground, the false ecumenical spirit animating so much of the Vatican II innovation had been clearly condemned by Pius XI in Mortalium Animos:

“Certainly such attempts can nowise be approved by Catholics, founded as they are on that false opinion which considers all religions to be more or less good and praiseworthy, since they all in different ways manifest and signify that sense which is inborn in us all, and by which we are led to God and to the obedient acknowledgment of His rule. Not only are those who hold this opinion in error and deceived, but also in distorting the idea of true religion they reject it, and little by little turn aside to naturalism and atheism, as it is called; from which it clearly follows that one who supports those who hold these theories and attempt to realize them, is altogether abandoning the divinely revealed religion.”

Nonetheless, many sincere Council Fathers and other Catholics went along with the novelties. Surely they did so with the belief that these efforts would bring non-Catholics to the Church.

But we have seen the exact opposite in most nations that had a strong Catholic population before the Council: by telling Catholics that all Christian religions are pleasing to God and paths to Heaven, they led so many souls to believe that they did not really need to follow the Church’s teachings after all. So they left the Church. And as Catholics left the Faith, the proponents of false ecumenism doubled down on their unholy efforts, accelerating the exodus from the Church.

Is all of this completely baffling or can we find a simple explanation? If we assume that the popes prior to Vatican II were correct, the picture is as clear as it is tragic: the enemies of the Church (especially the Freemasons) sought to introduce Liberal and Modernist errors into Catholic teaching to subvert the religion; at Vatican II, they finally succeeded in introducing these subtle errors, which they have been exploiting ever since in an attempt to destroy the Church. With false ecumenism they were not trying to fill the pews, they were trying to get faithful Catholics out of the way for a new world order.

Francis is arguably committing the most extensive hate crime in human history — by persecuting millions of Catholics who simply want to believe what the Church has always taught — all for the sake of serving the demonic globalist agenda.

So it is today that we see Francis and his collaborators attacking the Traditional Latin Mass with such ferocity at the same time as he supports various initiatives of the Great Reset. The man is not confused; rather he relentlessly pursues an anti-Catholic agenda to crush the most potent opposition to the Great Reset. In so doing, he is arguably committing the most extensive hate crime in human history — by persecuting millions of Catholics who simply want to believe what the Church has always taught — all for the sake of serving the demonic globalist agenda. This is the most important sign in the world today.

How should we interpret and act upon this sign? Why does the most evil group of people ever assembled have such disproportionate fear and loathing of those who simply believe what the Church has always taught? As all the saints could tell us, it is because we follow Christ, and our enemies follow the prince of this world, whether they know it or not. As such, we must follow the Irish Catholics, the English martyrs, the French Vendeans, the Mexican Cristeros, and the Spanish Carlists in keeping the Mass and the unadulterated Catholic Faith that our heretical enemies despise.

We fast approach the climactic moment in this spiritual battle that involves the entire world as never before. As much as we detest the way in which Francis persecutes those he purports to represent, we should see it as a sign that we are doing God’s will and cannot abandon our path. We stand in the way of the demonic globalists and have no intention of budging — we know that God will crush them and He will give us all the grace we need to resist in the meantime. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!
