The Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community and the Catholic world lost a dear friend, Father Angelus M. Shaughnessy, OFM Cap., on March 2, 2018 at the age of 89. He died at 2:15pm while praying the 5th Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary, the Crucifixion, on a First Friday dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Shaughnessy was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on June 4, 1955, a First Saturday dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Father Angelus is perhaps best known for his time at the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in Birmingham, Alabama from 2001 to 2007. There, he appeared world-wide while serving in the background as the Minister General to the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word. Father Angelus had also faithfully served God as a missionary to Papua New Guinea from 1966 to 1980. Father Angelus was a ‘man of the world,’ but his roots were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Born on November 16, 1929 in Rochester, PA (Diocese of Pittsburgh), he was baptized at St. Cecilia Church by a Capuchin priest, Father Hugh Rauwolf. He attended St. Fidelis College and Seminary in Herman, PA. On July 14, 1950, Father Angelus professed his vows as Capuchin Friar.
While stationed in the Western Pennsylvania area, in the time following the promulgation of Ecclesia Dei in 1988, Father offered his first Traditional Latin Mass for the Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community, on August 2, 1992 at St. Agnes Church in Pittsburgh. When in town, Father Angelus would continue to serve the Pittsburgh Latin Mass community for more than a decade at St. Boniface in Pittsburgh (aka: Holy Wisdom Parish) and St. Titus in Aliquippa.
This is what Father Angelus used to tell other Catholics about the Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community:
“Jesus called us His friends because He revealed all the secrets of the Heavenly Father to us. It seems the best kept secret in our American neighborhoods these days is the presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. In so many places He has been: MINIMALIZED, CASUALIZED, TRIVIALIZED, and sometimes even OSTRACIZED. How sad to treat the greatest gift of God to us in such a shabby fashion! There is one place in Pittsburgh where this kind of treatment to the Lord is not the case. That is in the Latin Mass Community of Holy Wisdom Parish, where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered in the Tridentine Tradition … The faithful who participate in these Holy Masses truly have a sense of the sacred. Even the children who come are most edifying. The choir that sings the High Mass is among the best.” (from a 1996 Holy Wisdom bulletin)
Various emails in the Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community announced recently that Father Angelus was dying at the Vincentian Home near Pittsburgh. As soon as I heard, I visited him and extended the Latin Mass Community’s appreciation and promise of prayers. I asked Father Shaughnessy if he would like to receive the Traditional Latin form of Extreme Unction. Without hesitation, he agreed and proceeded to make the appropriate responses in Latin. As prescribed by tradition, I anointed Father’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, back of the hands (not on the palms for a priest) and feet. Following other prayers, “The Rite of the Apostolic Blessing with Plenary Indulgence at the Hour of Death” was imparted. Father Angelus had a Brown Scapular. Before I left, I asked if it would be acceptable to him if I wrote an article about our visit for The Remnant. He said: “Surely.”
After my visit, on the day before he died, ten members of Pittsburgh’s Traditional Latin Mass Schola Cantorum of St. John XXIII Parish, under the direction of John Rokosz, performed for Father Angelus. On the day of his death, I offered a Traditional Latin Requiem Mass for the soul of Father Angelus Shaughnessy.
During his life on earth, Father Angelus served the faithful of the Pittsburgh Traditional Latin Mass Community. At the time of his departure from this earth, and after his death, our prayers and appreciation for him were expressed and will continue. May we meet again in Heaven, and in the meantime, hold forth to that certain Catholic doctrine that the “Church Triumphant,” the “Church Suffering,” and the “Church Militant,” are always united in the “Communion of Saints.”

In the wake of the Parkland school shooting, while most of the media’s passionately clamoring against guns, one woman makes a far shrewder point:
By Suzanne Venker | Fox News: My most recent article about the Parkland school shooting and its connection to fatherlessness prompted a tsunami of emails. In one of those emails, a man named Fritz asked what I considered to be the root of fatherlessness. I decided to write a follow-up article to answer that question.
The subject of “The Desperate Cry of America’s Boys” is a difficult one. To point out that boys need their fathers is to shine a spotlight on divorce and single mothers; and that is, admittedly, uncomfortable. But there’s no way to address fatherlessness comfortably.
The fact is, divorce and family breakdown—which, to answer my emailer’s question, is the root of fatherlessness—is catastrophic for children. There’s more than one reason why, but an obvious one is that in the majority of cases, divorce separates children from their fathers.
This is destructive to both boys and girls, but each sex suffers differently. Girls who grow up deprived of their father are more likely to become depressed, more likely to self-harm, and more likely to be promiscuous. But they still have their mothers, with whom they clearly identify. Boys do not have a comparable identification and thus suffer more from father absence. They also tend to act out in a manner that’s harmful to others, which girls typically do not
…When boys don’t have this model, they suffer. And when they suffer, society suffers. A majority of school shooters come from fatherless homes; and a study of older male shooters (think Steven Paddock of the Las Vegas massacre) produces similar results. Indeed, the consequences of fatherlessness are simply staggering.
The root of fatherlessness is deep and wide, but it ultimately rests in two things: our culture’s dismissal of men as valuable human beings who have something unique to offer—on the one hand, we tell them to ‘man up,’ and on the other we tell them manhood is the problem—and its dismissal of marriage as an institution that’s crucial to the health and well-being of children. This long-standing belief has been supplanted by the notion that marriage is about the emotional fulfillment of adults.
It is not. Marriage is about the needs of children, pure and simple. That’s how it began, and that’s how it remains. Children’s needs are the same today as they were one hundred years ago. It is we, not they, who have changed. Read her excellent article HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: Now we’re getting somewhere! Please, click on the link above, read the entire article, and share it with your friends and family.
The Remnant will not be getting into the guns debate here. We've said our piece. We support Second Amendment rights. But this is so much bigger than that. If we don't address the fundamental problems that have developed in our society since we ran Christian Morality out of town and told God to go to Hell, it won't matter if we put the nation's schools in lock down, arm all the teachers with AR-15s and put state-of-the-art metal detectors in every doorway. The evil will continue to come in, the madness will only increase, and the pungent stench of death will continue to permeate the streets and classrooms of our precious New World Order.
You cannot possibly gun down all the monsters we're mass producing in progressive laboratories from sea to shining sea. Only God can save us now.

Uh-oh. Sounds like Fr. Spadaro’s been @triggered…
February 20, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Papal confidante Father Antonio Spadaro retweeted a call for EWTN to be severely censured “until they get rid of Raymond Arroyo.”
The call for an “interdict” to be imposed on the Catholic media empire started by Mother Angelica came from Anthony Annett, Assistant to the Director at the International Monetary Fund’s Communications Department.
An interdict is essentially one step short of excommunication. It bans a person or people from accessing most Church Sacraments.
Annett called for an interdict to be imposed on EWTN because of a February 15 World Over segment.
“Make no mistake,” tweeted Annett, the show’s discussion of a recent Spadaro speech and ultra-liberal Cardinal Blase Cupich “represent ‘total war’ on the papacy of Pope Francis.”
…Arroyo was a close friend of Mother Angelica. He is the author of numerous books. As confusion has mounted during Pope Francis’ reign, his signature show, The World Over, has analyzed troubling developments in the Church. Arroyo often does this with the help of Father Gerald Murray and Robert Royal (the “papal posse”).
Spadaro, a Jesuit who is often called the pope’s “mouthpiece,” frequently criticizes critics of Amoris Laetitia’s ambiguity or the Francis pontificate. He is the editor-in-chief of La Civiltà Cattolica. Read the full report HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: Good for Raymond Arroyo! What Father Spadaro--the "Pope's Mouthpiece"--doesn't realize is that the shark has been jumped. The jig is up. The cat's out of the Vatican’s bag. The world is onto them. Get rid of Raymond Arroyo and he'll become an even more outspoken critic of the Vatican dog and pony show. Consign him to the Gulag and a dozen others will step up and take his place. Nobody is falling for it anymore, Father Tony....nobody!
Pope Francis has awakened the sleeping giant. All glory and honor to God.
(Note to Raymond Arroyo: If worse comes to worst and you find yourself living under a bridge somewhere, eating out of dumpster and hiding from Vatican hitmen--well, you're always welcome at our fire.)

In case you weren’t convinced that Vatican II was plagued from its inception with a demonic spirit, how about the fact that the writer of Nostra Aetate was concealing his gay lifestyle and flatly rejected the Church’s teaching on sexuality and non-Catholic relations?
(LifeSiteNews) — 93-year-old Gregory Baum, a famed Canadian Catholic ex-priest, has in his latest book revealed that he secretly led an active homosexual life for decades.
Baum, who was a peritus or expert at the Second Vatican Council, reportedly composed the first draft of the conciliar document Nostra aetate, the Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions. Baum advocated for the elimination of the Church’s efforts to encourage Jews to recognize Christ as the Messiah and has since pushed social justice and liberation theology.
The influential cleric reveals candidly in The Oil Has Not Run Dry: The Story of My Theological Pathway, “I did not profess my own homosexuality in public because such an act of honesty would have reduced my influence as a critical theologian.” “I was eager to be heard as a theologian trusting in God as salvator mundi and committed to social justice, liberation theology, and global solidarity.”
Baum was also influential in the Catholic Church in Canada despite his openly heretical positions on sexuality, which he published in various journals. His public dissent from the 1968 declaration of the Church maintaining the ban on contraception — Humanae Vitae — was instrumental in the Canadian bishops’ own dissent from the encyclical of Pope Paul VI. As the foremost expert on the Canadian bishops’ dissent, Monsignor Vincent Foy has written, “If it had not been for the black shadow of Baum over Winnipeg, his influence over some Bishops, the Canadian theological establishment and pressure groups, the Winnipeg Statement of the Canadian Bishops on Humanae Vitae would not have refused to endorse the teaching of the encyclical as it did.”
In his new book, Baum writes, “I was 40 years old when I had my first sexual encounter with a man. I met him in a restaurant in London. This was exciting and at the same time disappointing, for I knew what love was and what I really wanted was to share my life with a partner.” Read the rest HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: How this ultra-liberal convert from Judaism managed to land a gig as peritus at Vatican II is, in and of itself, rather curious. But, there you have it. Regardless of the many good Council Fathers who attempted (in vain) to steer the Council in a Catholic direction, the reality is the Second Vatican Council quickly became a hotbed of radicals, liberals, modernists who did all in their power to destroy the Church by subverting the Council. History will surely show that the Council was a Modernist coup d’état. In fact, as this news bit makes clear, history is already showing us this. The time for asking for clarity has come and gone. With the passage of time, Vatican II is becoming perfectly clear. What’s needed is another council at a future time to recall Vatican II and condemn its many errors and novelties.

Press Release from The Family Research Council:
What do actor George Clooney, Apple, and the Washington Post all have in common? They support the radical agenda of the $320 million Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
The media, big corporations, and Hollywood are pouring millions into the coffers of the SPLC for one express purpose: to marginalize and ultimately silence the voice of Christians.
Please click here to CONTRIBUTE TO FRC's $200,000 campaign to expose the SPLC right now.
If they succeed, the consequences will be devastating to your family, your children, the church, local schools, and our country. That's why I am writing with so much urgency today!
FRC's work, in addition to your financial assistance, will help us fight back with our own dedicated campaign calling out the SPLC's radical initiative, that includes...
- "Teaching tolerance" campaign. SPLC is dead set on putting a militant LGBT curriculum in every single public school classroom in America. Those that oppose their effort are branded a "hate group," including parents who are concerned about their children's education.
- "Best Practices" handbook. SPLC directs teachers and administrators to create an LGBT-inclusive "school climate" by using gender inclusive language and encouraging students to attend events with same-sex dates.
The SPLC's campaign also targets FRC and many other Christian, Catholic, and Pentecostal organizations as "hate groups" -- lumping us in with the KKK and Neo-Nazis.
Exposing the SPLC's radical agenda is one of the highest priorities we have here at FRC in 2018. Part of the resources we raise are dedicated to continue our tracking and researching the ins and outs of the SPLC's radical agenda, exposing it online at sites like SPLCexposed.com, monitoring their activities, and alerting families, Christians, and other concerned citizens about their destructive activities.
Please let me hear from you today! Your tax-deductible gift will help us fight the SPLC with all of the muscle we can muster. With your support, we can win this battle.
Standing (Eph. 6:13),
REMNANT COMMENT: Supporting non-Catholic organizations attempting to expose the fundamentally Christophobic Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has to be one of the more legit ecumenical endeavors I can think of.
The Remnant is listed as a hate group by the SPLC too, of course—something of a badge of honor at this point—but we’re just one of a growing list of Christian groups targeted by the SPLC—one of the largest and richest ACTUAL hate groups in America. What they want is to shut us all down.
Over the years, we've considered the legal option, of course; but the SPLC is comprised of cunning Far-Left lawyers—experts in the use and exploitation of laws protecting free speech. The same laws that protect our freedoms of speech and the press also provide inadvertent cover for the SPLC.
Here in America, victims of this kind of slander have very little legal recourse. They say we’re a “hate group”, but what does that mean? How is “hate” legally defined or definable? It’s just the opinion of the SPLC that we’re “haters”, and everyone is free to make of that what he wants. But it’s not technically against the law.
There is an alternative strategy, however, that is gaining plenty of traction. I’m referring to the organized effort to defeat the SPLC in the court of public opinion. Christian groups, pro-life organizations, libertarians and a wide variety of different conservative groups have united in an effort to raise awareness about the radical agenda to silence Christian America.
We wish Godspeed and every success to the FRC as they go on offense against the Southern Poverty Law Center. We’ll do whatever we can to help the cause, which is gaining powerful allies. Here, for example, is John Stossel—a mainstream libertarian commentator who, though not particularly conservative, nevertheless recognizes a total fraud when he sees one:

Remnant editor, Michael J. Matt, will sit on the AOTM panel for an open discussion on the duty of Catholic men to either stand with their orthodox priests or stand against the liberals.
Plus, why does the hiearchy of the Catholic Church pretend that the Church's teaching against the homosexual lifestyle has changed somehow, when in fact it has not? Why are they all lying to gay people?

COMPLY or be CRUSHED: Michael Matt to Speak in St. Paul Tuesday, February 13Written by Remnant Press Release
Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Google are playing a sick game:
From TownHall.com: If Facebook killed every conservative page overnight, there would be a huge outcry. On the other hand, if Facebook slowly strangled us to death, we’d fade away and would people even notice?
… In addition to that, as someone who has been working for a living in this business since 2005, let me drop a little truth bomb on you. We are now in a very oversaturated, corporation-dominated media environment. If you don’t already have a legacy website that captured traffic years ago and held onto it, huge traffic you can bring in from elsewhere, or millions of dollars to spend, your chances of getting a political website off the ground today are infinitesimal.
That gets to the heart of the biggest problem conservatives don’t realize that they have.
Social media IS the new public square. It’s the place you go when you want to reach out and find an audience. …….Except Facebook has for all intents and purposes announced that it’s killing off pages. So much for having a conservative voice there.
…Speaking of building up an audience on a platform for years and then getting screwed, YouTube is also doing that to conservatives.
… It’s easy to say, “Build your own social media website and compete with them,” but we’re talking about companies with billions of dollars and monopolistic control of their markets. The obvious solution would be to break these companies up or to at least acknowledge their importance to modern society and regulate them heavily, but conservatives don’t seem to be interested enough in either solution to even THREATEN to do this. Read the whole thing HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: We have reason to suspect this is happening to us here at The Remnant, too. Our Facebook numbers have plummeted over the past few months, and they've done so during the same period when other Remnant numbers were on dramatic upswing.
It seems that liberal social media rewards conservative success with the blackball.
True, it could just be bad press. There are traditional Catholic blogs out there which hardly let a day go by without blasting The Remnant. But somehow I don't think that's it. A recent RTV video hit the half-million view mark in record time (for us) and is still climbing. But the same video shows negligible interest on Facebook. The sniping of petty bloggers could hardly account for that.
What's the solution? What it's always been for us: Don't put all the Remnant eggs in one basket; keep the Print-edition alive; promote the E-edition; build up RTV’s own non-YouTube platform. Do not allow the gods of the Internet to have total access to and control over the traditional Catholic press. Why not? Because it’s their ball and it’s their playground—and they will win every time.
But you can help us fight back against these Christophobes by spreading the word to family and friends that we're here and that we’re building alternatives. The Remnant is one of the few traditional Catholic organizations in the world that is not at all web dependent.
I really don't care what the "experts" say about newsprint having joined the dinosaurs--The Remnant will not give it up. We're putting more time and money into it, in fact, and what we're finding is a growing appreciation for that effort. No one can track your movements when you’re sitting in your favorite chair next to your fire reading a newspaper, and more and more folks are glad to have that peace of mind.
Big Brother Fatigue is giving newsprint an assist, I think.
My 20-year-old is off in college. The other day he told me he'd taken a nine iron to his smart phone and went out and bought the oldest flip phone he could find. He tells me it was the most liberating thing he’s done in a long time. He also tells me lots of good kids his age are growing sick and tired of being chained to their devices.
For me it shed new light on the rather satanic scenario that plays out in the old Eagles’ song, Hotel California: “we are all just prisoners here, of our own device.” Indeed, we are…the difference being we can check out anytime we like and, if we want, we can actually leave.
The Remnant can help, in fact, by offering an alternative to the online prison: the old newspaper, folded in half on the coffee table, unplugged, non-surveilled. Quiet. Peaceful. No popups. No ads. No gimmicks. No dark side.
I hope you'll consider subscribing to our newspaper or, at the very least, help us build up a safe and Christocentric online alternative to Facebook and YouTube and all the rest by visiting our website every day and on your own, i.e., without having to be reminded by our social media “partners” which are, it would seem, actively working against us and against everything for which we stand, especially the Social Kingship of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

E-Fascism: Social Media Bias and the Hotel CaliforniaWritten by Michael J. Matt | Editor
From important causes like #FreeMeekMill (see below), to taking a knee for the National Anthem, our NFL heroes continue to keep it real, America.
From Deena Zaru, CNN: Meek Mill might not be able to attend this year's Super Bowl, but the imprisoned rapper was with his home team in spirit on Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles took the field to his 2012 song "Dreams and Nightmares" --- the ultimate underdog anthem.
Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison in September by Philadelphia Judge Genece E. Brinkley, who cited a failed drug test and the rapper's noncompliance with a court order restricting his travel.
The rapper, who is a big football fan, appeared in court following probation violations related to a 2008 gun and drug case. Outrage over his sentence moved beyond the courtroom and sparked a criminal justice debate.
At Sunday's game, Minnesota Timberwolves player Karl-Anthony Towns was spotted on the sidelines wearing an Eagles jersey with #FreeMeekMill, which has become a rallying cry among the rapper's fans and activists.
The Eagles also showed solidarity with Mill when they celebrated their January 21 win against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game by blasting "Dreams and Nightmares" in the locker room. READ MORE HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: According to NFLArrest.com, which provides an interactive visualized database of National Football League player arrests and charges, it's now been eleven whole days since a National Football League hero of the gridiron has been arrested. The record number of days between arrests is sixty-five, but the average is only seven.
Of the 32 teams in the NFL, the Denver Broncos top this list in number of players arrested, with our very own Minnesota Vikings coming in a close second and the Houston Texans bringing up the rear. The crimes run the usual gambit from DUI to sexual assault to murder and drug use.
Top "player" on the arrest list is cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones of the Cincinnati Bengals, who comes in with a whopping ten arrests, the most recent on January 3, 2018. After Pacman's arrest for disorderly conduct, he spent the night in jail. Why? Because, naturally, after his arrest he became combative, and remained that way throughout his booking process at the Hamilton County Jail. Finally, he had to be placed in "a restraint chair," Hamilton County sheriff's spokesman Mike Robison said in a news release.
When a female nurse, following normal protocol, tried to examine Jones, he “proceeded to spit on her.” Among the multiple charges Jones faces is a felony charge of harassment with a bodily substance. Now let’s remember, this guy has a contract with the Bengals worth $24 million over three years. He’s a professional!
With heroes like these is it any wonder why the social fabric of this country is becoming a bit threadbare?
We’re solemnly assured that the reason these professionals take a knee during the National Anthem is to show solidarity with their brothers suffering from police brutality. Well maybe so, but if they were to adopt a similar attitude of zero tolerance where their fellow NFL players are concerned--especially those beating people up, spitting at police nurses, using drugs and getting themselves arrested all over the country--maybe that "brutality" would subside a bit.
In the meantime, let's take a look at the positive side of the NFL -- it brings communities together. Here, for example, is how fans from the City of Brotherly Love celebrated their club's victory over the Patriots in last Sunday's Super Bowl:
Where it used to be that to the victors went the spoils, it would now seem to be the other way around—with the spoils going to the losers, at least in the sense of being spared having their cities torn apart in the ensuing victory celebration.
I'm not sure I can come up with an historical precedent whereby the victors proceeded to sack and loot their own city. But, then again, we've never seen a more enlightened and progressive civilization than ours so, naturally, there'd be no precedent.
In the meantime, yes, #FreeMeekMill—another fun loving kid from the neighborhood, whose endorsement by the Philadelphia Eagles typifies according the American Thinker, "everything about how far professional football has fallen and how the NFL celebrates the obscene, the vulgar, the dangerous, and the foolish."
Regardless of the rapper’s unsettled life, writes Breitbart’s Warner Todd Huston in a February 4 column, the Meek Mill rap song the Eagles pumped into U.S. Bank Stadium as they ran onto the Super Bowl field to the delight of their legions of little fans is "an unsavory mix of sexism, violence, and a constant use of the 'n-word.' The song is filled with the sexist treatment of women, sexual exploitation, and constant use of the 'F-word.' The song is also replete with the use of the 'n-word' over and over again."
(We'd intended to make a cleaned up RTV video of the Meek Mill Super Bowl anthem but decided against it after realizing it would take hours just to edit out all the "f-words'. Go birds!)
This was the same song, by the way, that our new Super Bowl heroes insisted on blasting after their NFC Championship victory. It’s their fun little theme song, I guess, which Daily News columnist Jenice Armstrong slammed, saying, “When you celebrate winning the NFC Championship with a song that glorifies murder and sexual promiscuity, that’s beneath you. It looks bad.”
Yeah, that's it. It looks bad. Glorifying murder and sexual promiscuity to millions of kids just . doesn't . look . good! And although he sat in jail during this year's Super Bowl for violating his probation, this felon's anthem to murder and promiscuity was heard all around the world. #BoycottNFL
National Felons League Okays Glorification of Murder, PromiscuityWritten by Michael J. Matt | Editor
Fr. Lawrence Carney is chaplain to a traditional order of nuns, the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, in Gower, Missouri. He visits the community daily to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass, hear confession and offer spiritual guidance. Then he takes to the inner-city streets of St. Joseph in his cassock and wide-brimmed hat to pray the rosary and be a visible presence of Christ and his Church. He has encountered many lost souls on his walks, and successfully brought them back to the Faith. “It’s what Our Lord did,” he reasons. “Many people see me and are moved to come up to me and talk.”
Fr. Carney had the idea to do this after going on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in his cassock, and was approached by an estimated 1,000 souls during his 32-day trek. He has continued this unique method of evangelization for over three years in America, and has finally received permission to establish an order to expand the ministry.
From Gloria TV:
Father Lawrence Carney announced in an email (January 23) that after four years of prayer, he has been approved on December 8 to accept men into the Canons Regular of St. Martin of Tours. The new community is based in Saint Joseph, Missouri, in the diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph.
The priest who wears a black cassock and Saturno clergy hat, is engaged in street evangelisation. OurSundayVisitor quotes him, “There’s something mysterious about the cassock; it acts like a magnet, drawing people to you”. READ MORE HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: This is great news indeed, if not particularly surprising. Over the years I've had many opportunities to walk down streets on both sides of the Atlantic in the company of priests in cassocks, and my reaction to this has always been the same: Mother Church surely knew what she was doing when she dressed her sons in a way that made them stand out wherever they went, anywhere on earth.
Priests of the old world were visible to the whole world, wherever they went. They never really "punched out." And neither did they go into the world incognito, as is the case so often today. They made themselves approachable by being always willing to "stick out" and stay "on the clock," ready to serve souls.
I can't tell you how many times over the years I've seen native kids in Mexico, tourists in France, hikers in Spain, commuters in European metros, wanderers and street urchins approach my priest friends or Remnant Tours chaplains, asking for everything from a simple blessing to forgiveness for their sins. Especially in airports. So often, just before a flight is scheduled to take off, a young man will approach the cassocked priest and ask him to hear his confession. It’s such a beautiful thing. Real missionaries of mercy in action, in every traditional priest, all over the world.
What sort of demonic mind conceived of the notion to strip away the identifying habit--the calling card, if you will--of the Catholic priest, thus robbing us all of this visual reminder that God is with us and that His mercy is right there for the asking, sitting in the next train seat down, in fact.
Reminds me of the famous conversion story of Sir Alex Guinness—the outstanding English actor who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars (among other far greater but lesser known roles). He was in France making the film adaptation of G. K. Chesterton’s crime-solving priest, Father Brown. And as he was playing a Catholic priest he was naturally dressed like one, which in those days meant black cassock and clerical beaver hat.
At one point he was taking a walk between shoots but still in costume. He cut through some bushes and then down onto a little lane, where he surprised a local lad making his way home.
Rather than showing any sign of fear at the sudden appearance of the big black-cassocked man, however, the boy trotted eagerly right up to the "priest", took him by the hand and began chatting as they walked down the lane together. In an instant, priest and boy had become father and son.
That demonstration of immediate trust and genuine affection for the figure of the Catholic priest in those days made a deep and lasting impression on Sir Alex Guinness, and in fact helped set him on the road to his eventual conversion to the Catholic Faith. In his autobiography, Guinness notes:
“Continuing my walk, I reflected that a Church that could inspire such confidence in a child, making priests, even when unknown, so easily approachable, could not be as scheming or as creepy as so often made out. I began to shake off my long-taught, long-absorbed prejudices.”
That was a long time ago—long before Vatican II and the disastrous demotion of the Catholic priest to "regular guy". It was back when priests were proud to dress the part, on and off the Altar of Sacrifice. After that Altar had been transformed into a table, and the Mass became a Meal -- well, I guess priests decided that if there was no sacrifice anymore there's no real need for priests, either. And so many of them became more or less administrators, and dressed accordingly.
Praise God, Father Carney and so many young priests today are moving back in the right direction where the priesthood is concerned. And this is yet another reason for us to not lose hope and to always keep in mind that the Church is human and divine; the human element is rather in shambles right now, admittedly, but the same cannot be said of the divine element. God will save His Church in His time. And the Father Carney’s out there give us all hope that this will happen sooner rather than later.

Vatican City, Jan 29, 2018 / 06:40 am (CNA/EWTN News)
On Monday Pope Francis released a new apostolic constitution calling for a “radical” reform to the nature and curriculum of ecclesiastical universities and institutions.
“The primary need today is for the whole People of God to be ready to embark upon a new stage of Spirit-filled evangelization,” the Pope said in the document, “Vertatis Gaudium.”
This new stage of evangelization, he said, “calls for a resolute process of discernment, purification and reform. In this process, a fitting renewal of the system of ecclesiastical studies plays a strategic role.”
Signed Dec. 8, 2017, and published Jan. 29, 2018, the 87-page document is Francis' is titled “Veritatis Gaudium,” meaning “the joy of truth.”
The document deals specifically with ecclesiastical universities and faculties, which, differing from regular Catholic universities, offer Vatican-approved degrees required to teach in seminaries or at pontifical universities.
It consists of two parts dedicated to general norms and specific norms, and also contains an appendix and norms of application. The document is meant to “update” previous norms, and abrogates any prior rules which contradict the new ones laid out by Pope Francis in Veritatis Gaudium.
The document abrogates any contrary norms established by John Paul II's 1979 Apostolic Constitution “Sapientia Christiana,” issued after a careful study of the Second Vatican Council's decree “Optatam Totius” on ecclesiastical studies. However, John Paul II's 1990 Apostolic Constitution “Ex corde Ecclesiae” is not impacted , as it deals specifically with Catholic colleges and universities, rather than ecclesiastical academic entities.
...Francis noted that the world is currently living not only a time of change, but it is also experiencing “a true epochal shift, marked by a wide-ranging anthropological and environmental crisis,” such as natural, social and financial disasters which are swiftly reaching “a breaking point.” READ MORE HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: Francis is now injecting his erroneous and harmful personal views on the environment, as well as other errors, info official curricula for pontifical universities; trying to cement the rot for generations to come. Anyone who doubts global warming will not be fit to teach at a pontifical university?
The Bergoglification of Catholic UniversitiesWritten by Chris Jackson | Remnant Columnist
This just in from Breitbart:
In a troubling new open letter to the media, the redoubtable Cardinal Joseph Zen, China’s highest ranking Catholic prelate, has accused the Vatican of “selling out” the Church by caving in to demands of the Communist leaders.
Sparking the cardinal’s declarations Monday were recent reports of the Vatican asking two Chinese bishops faithful to Rome to resign their posts in order to make way for new bishops of the Patriotic Association, the surrogate Catholic Church in China subject to the Communist party.
Cardinal Zen said he was able to independently verify those reports. The problem, Zen writes, “is not the resignation of the legitimate Bishops, but the request to make place for the illegitimate and even excommunicated ones.”
A Vatican document of 1988 barred Roman Catholics from participating in the sacraments of the Patriotic Church, since the association “had broken all relationships with the pope” and would be “under the direct control of the government.”
In his letter titled “Dear friends in the media,” Cardinal Zen recounts a recent meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican, in which the pontiff assured him that they would not “create another Mindszenty case,” referring to the heroic Cardinal Archbishop of Budapest, who was imprisoned by the Communists and subsequently replaced by the Vatican with a successor more to the likings of the Communist government. REMNANT COMMENT: The God of Surprises strikes again. We're to the point now where it's hats off to Francis for at least being true to his world. He said he was going to permanently change the Church (read: destroy it) in such a way that it could never be changed back, and that's exactly what he's doing.
One wonders what the orthodox cardinals and bishops are waiting for. Are they ever going to stand up and stop this man? Cardinal Burke, for example, where is his "formal correction"? And for that matter, what's with the Society of St. Pius X? Anybody heard from them lately? Isn't it time for a J'accuse le Pape or perhaps another Letter to Confused Catholics?
God help us, how much worse does this have to get before the Catholic world rises up en masse and demands this papal dictator either cease and desist, or step down?
Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, pray for us.
