Archbishop Viganò, why did you write a letter in favor of President Trump?

On August 14, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI let me know that it was his conviction that at that moment my providential position was the Nunciature in the United States of America. This is what he wrote to me: “I would like to tell you that I have reflected and prayed with reference to your condition after the recent events. The sad news of the passing away of His Excellency Archbishop Pietro Sambi has confirmed in me the conviction that your providential position at this moment is the Nunciature in the United States of America. On the other hand, I am certain that your knowledge of this great country will help you to undertake the demanding challenge of this work, which in many ways will prove decisive for the future of the universal Church.”

My official assignment in that immense and beloved country has ended, but the challenge to which Pope Benedict referred to almost prophetically, and in which he chose to involve me, is still present more than ever; indeed, it has become ever more dramatic, taking on tremendous dimensions: the destiny of the world is being played out at this hour precisely on the American front.

After the Senate had advanced the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to the floor of the U.S. Senate. Planned Parenthood Federation of America submitted a formal letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee opposing Barrett’s nomination.

Seeking to find any coherence of the recent action of the Society of Jesus with the original intentions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is an arduous if not impossible task, to the point that in hindsight one considers the reconstitution of the Order in 1814 after its suppression by Clement XIV in 1773 to have been ill-advised. It is not surprising that, in the process of dissolution and self-demolition to which the entire ecclesial body is subjected, the contribution of the Jesuits has been – and still remains – decisive.

It is no coincidence that since 2013 even the highest throne has been occupied by a Jesuit, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, even though this is in violation of the Ignatian Rule that forbids members of the Society of Jesus to take up positions in the hierarchy.

Good News for the CIC, Thanks to Trump

On September 14, a Trump-appointed federal judge ruled that Pennsylvania’s Democrat Governor Tom Wolf’s draconian coronavirus measures—which shut down the state, closed businesses and dramatically limited gatherings—were unconstitutional per the 1st and 14th Amendments. The judge’s decision applies to everyone in Pennsylvania and means the stay-at-home order can never be repeated.

This, quite obviously, will have national ramifications.

U.S. District Judge William S. Stickman IV, who was appointed to the bench in 2019, wrote a 66-page opinion arguing that “even a vigilant public may let down its guard over its constitutional liberties only to find that liberties, once relinquished, are hard to recoup and that restrictions — while expedient in the face of an emergency situation — may persist long after immediate danger has passed.”

It was one of those stories that should have headlined across our fruited plain, but in this age of COVID-19 and Trump Derangement Syndrome, it wouldn’t suit the narrative. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their website regarding COVID-19’s deaths and the numbers have been greatly reduced of those who died strictly from the virus. 

“For 6 percent of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned,” the CDC’s latest report revealed. “For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, diabetes, or heart disease.”

As the 2020 NFL season gets underway, Michael J. Matt reads an open letter written in 2016 by retired Marine Col. Jeffery Powers to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, which has recently reappeared on social media.

Powers is a decorated veteran of the Gulf War. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps achieving the rank of Colonel, and his letter resurfaced after the NFL announced plans to sanction kneeling for the anthem during the 2020 season.
