Sister Simone Campbell, a dissident nun most famous for her "Nuns on a Bus" work, spoke at the Vatican on Wednesday at a conference for International Women's Day. Titled "Voices of Faith," the conference has taken place for four consecutive years. This year's program thanked Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, chancellor of The Pontifical Academy of Sciences, "for opening the doors to the Casina Pio IV."  FULL REPORT HERE

REMNANT COMMENT: So, a pro-abort "nun" is an honored guest speaker at the Vatican this week, a pro-genocide whacko last week, I wonder what's up next week. Anton LaVey?

Not that this doesn't make perfect sense. I mean, obviously, the Vatican was as impressed with "Sister" Simone's nutty little cry for help in Washington back in January as we were:

I'm not sure if Sister Simone's "girl power" wonder twin, Sister Joan Chittister, has gotten herself ordained a priest yet or not, but if she's not offering Mass somewhere, maybe she can land a gig at the Vatican next month. This gal pal is always fun at a party!

VATICAN CITY – Senator Tim Kaine met with Pope Francis after attending a general audience with him on Wednesday. Kaine and the Pope discussed the Holy See’s work to address the global refugee and migrant crisis, according to the senator’s office.
“As the Pope stated so clearly yesterday, it is a ‘moral imperative’ to protect and defend the ‘inalienable rights’ of refugees and respect their dignity, especially by adopting just laws that protect those fleeing dangerous or inhumane situations,” said Kaine in a statement.

Kaine also participated in a discussion focused on Latin American issues with Vatican officials and members of other religious orders and meet with the Jesuit Refugee Service to discuss its work with refugees and asylum seekers.

REMNANT COMMENT: Thanks again, Francis.  You're really helping the pro-life movement:

And the pro-family movement:

Whatever! It's Pope Francis. What do you expect?

This just in from the New York Post:

When former President Barack Obama said he was “heartened” by anti-Trump protests, he was sending a message of approval to his troops. Troops? Yes, Obama has an army of agitators — numbering more than 30,000 — who will fight his Republican successor at every turn of his historic presidency. And Obama will command them from a bunker less than two miles from the White House.

In what’s shaping up to be a highly unusual post-presidency, Obama isn’t just staying behind in Washington. He’s working behind the scenes to set up what will effectively be a shadow government to not only protect his threatened legacy, but to sabotage the incoming administration and its popular “America First” agenda.

He’s doing it through a network of leftist nonprofits led by Organizing for Action. Normally you’d expect an organization set up to support a politician and his agenda to close up shop after that candidate leaves office, but not Obama’s OFA. Rather, it’s gearing up for battle, with a growing war chest and more than 250 offices across the country.

Since Donald Trump’s election, this little-known but well-funded protesting arm has beefed up staff and ramped up recruitment of young liberal activists, declaring on its website, “We’re not backing down.” Determined to salvage Obama’s legacy, it’s drawing battle lines on immigration, ObamaCare, race relations and climate change. REMNANT COMMENT: Isn't it fun to see just how dearly the liberals cherish the democratic process in this country?  I mean, once the 'people have spoken' through the sacred act of casting a vote, you can always count on the Ult-Left to blithely accept the long as it goes their way.

It’s little wonder why the ballot box in this country, at least where the Left is concerned, has become nothing more than a suggestion box for the slaves. They don’t believe in democracy any more than they believe in God, and they hate the people they pretend to serve.

But of course Christian monarchy was tyrannical, nasty, evil, intolerant and just bad, bad, BAD!  What a joke!  There was no king in the entire history of Christendom who had even a small fraction of the absolute power wielded by Barack Obama over the past eight years. And now it looks as if he wants it back.

President Barack Obama: Making the world safe for Mobocracy again!

This just in from The Washington Post:

How Pope Francis can cleanse the far-right rot from the Catholic Church:  "Pope Francis needs to take tougher action against the United States’ most influential Catholic in Rome, Cardinal Raymond “Breitbart” Burke. The renegade cleric is not only undermining Francis’s reformist, compassionate papacy, and gospel teaching as it applies to refugees and Muslims, but the rebel prince of the church is also using his position within the walls of the Vatican to legitimize extremist forces that want to bring down Western liberal democracy, Stephen K. Bannon-style. Simply put, the Vatican is facing a political war between the modernizing Pope Francis and a conservative wing that wants to reassert white Christian dominance." READ MORE HERE

REMNANT COMMENT: The author of this Catholic-bashing rant is Emma-Kate Symons -- a Washington-based journalist and former Paris correspondent. Her work has been published in Foreign Policy, Women in the World in association with the New York Times, Quartz, the Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal and the Australian Financial Review.

In other words, she's a person of some influence. Mark well how she concludes her article: "If the pope doesn’t put the reactionary elements such as Burke and his cronies back in their place, they could force a real schism during his papacy and leave the church open to justifiable accusations that it failed to stand up to enablers of extremism and neo-fascism within its ranks."

Smells a bit like blackmail, doesn't it?

"Extremism," "neo-fascism" and "white dominance" are terms not bandied about by journalists these days unless there is deliberate intent to vilify and intimidate a certain demographic. They immediately conjure up (at least in the minds of the undereducated) flickering black-and-white images of mass murderers on the History Channel -- e.g., Adolf Hitler, Joe Stalin, Pol Pot.  But surely when a “responsible” journalist employs such terms, it's not without good cause.  It can only mean that the person (or group) at whom such vitriol is directed must present a real threat to homeland security—someone that governments and police departments alike would be wise to monitor.

This inflammatory rhetoric (some might call it hate speech) is, ironically enough, the stock-in-trade of far-Left hate hunters. And, by and large, it works. And it's guaranteed to work in this case, when Francis comes blundering in with his weekly caricatures of faithful Catholics as "rigorists" and "extremists" in his own Church -- thus making the rhetoric seem that much more warranted.   "It must be true if the Pope thinks so too!"

In other words, Pope Francis is becoming key to the success of a radically anti-Catholic agenda.

The takeaway? Pope Francis is not merely a liberal-leaning pope with whom faithful Catholics are permitted to respectfully disagree. No, not anymore. His is the voice of reason against unreasonable Catholic “extremism” (read: orthodoxy). He’s the liberator who will rescue the modern world from a vengeful return of the Church of the Dark Ages, the Church of the Inquisition, the Church of a Repressive Moral Code that ushered millions into hopelessness and despair, lives cut short by Catholic Guilt.  And if you don’t go along with the Pope’s new and improved Church of Inclusion, Church of Accompaniment -- well, obviously, you’re a hater who wants people to die or at least live in misery.

If you're opposed to 'gay marriage,' for example, you have only a few years to publicly air those views. Francis is shifting the Church so far to the Left that those Catholics who do not go along with him (and, let’s face it, we're already to the point where Catholics are bound in conscience not to) will be easily vilified as "dangerous extremists", so filled with hate that even their own Church finds them deplorable.

You see how it works? This is no longer about a mere theological or philosophical divide in the Catholic Church, with progressives on one side and conservatives on the other. No, it's part of a purging, whereby radical Leftists will declare open season on faithful Catholics -- loners who have “broken away” from the Pope of Toleration in order to make common cause with the radicalized descendants of Tim McVey and Dave Koresh.

One little problem now, of course: 'Hate groups' were always and forever supposedly motivated by a paranoid anti-government fear factor -- the veritable meat and potatoes of "domestic terrorists". So with Donald Trump in the White House, the radical Left's go-to narrative becomes obsolete, and a new challenge presents itself: Link the "vast right-wing Christian conspiracy" to the White House this time around, and then condemn the entire "basket of deplorables" in one fell swoop.

It'll be interesting to see how this works out for them down the road. But, clearly, the Washington Post is trotting it out already with its paranoid call for Pope Francis  to crush some scaaaaaary Cardinal Burke-Steve Bannon cartel.  Depending on how this all plays out, Francis may turn out to be not only the most humble pope in history but also the most dangerous.

Perhaps this is why the Left is love-bombing him to death.

This from our friends a LifeSiteNews: "All the people in the various elements of this New World Order movement fully expected that Hillary Clinton’s election would lead to the implementation of the final stages of their plans. Under Barack Obama and the powerful influence of the European Union, UN and other elites, everything had been rapidly moving towards their gaining powers they have long sought. With that power they were set to radically transform international society, take full control of the economies of all nations, eliminate national sovereignties and impose dramatic social changes and extreme de-population measures on the world.

"The election of Donald Trump and a majority of Republicans to the Senate, Congress, governorships and other positions, have left the One-Worlders reeling. To them it has been like a giant earthquake upending their world and their evil plans. They are enraged and hysterical that their expectations of a dizzying final achievement of the total power of man as god has been smashed. That is their ultimate goal - replacing God with man - the great sin of pride of Adam." READ MORE HERE

REMNANT COMMENT: The liberal left in this country is rising up in satanic rage against Donald Trump. Without wishing to be an alarmist, it seems the "deplorables" would be wise to begin talking among themselves about the very real threat of home-grown, organized terrorists being incentivized by the radical Left.

Soros and his legions are inciting violence, hatred, racism and insurrection in nearly every major city in America. Think about that for a moment--the massive civic irresponsibility we see boldly broadcast on CNN and elsewhere on millions of television screens all across America.  They are fomenting a new kind of domestic terrorism that if left unchecked, will give ISIS a run for their money.

Whatever happened to the media's responsiblity to safeguard the common good? Since when does a given political agenda in a certain demographic trump law and order? This is anarchy, pure and simple.

Even the Left's attempt at humor is whipping up racial polarization.  With so many dead bodies, burning cities, and out-of-control riots in the streets of America--is this SNL bit really all that funny anymore?

Homegrown terrorists are being encouraged by the liberal establishment in the universities, news agencies, cultural icons (i.e., Madonna publicly musing about blowing up the White House), even Saturday Night Live. When it stops, the hate and violence will stop. Until it stops, watch your back.

A Remnant Book Review

Editor’s Note: We’re pleased to publish the following review of the excellent new book by Dr. Christian Washburn. Many thanks to Dr. Malloy (whose website is for sending us his excellent review of a book we heartily recommend. MJM

This collection of essays from one of the greatest American theologians, Msgr. Joseph C. Fenton, makes an urgent and marvelous contribution to the renewal of Catholic theology today. The hermeneutic of rupture has been utterly disastrous in just about every field of theology. Modernists have succeeded in putting bushels over the lights of so many life-giving dogmas, that the darkness draws its heavy curtain over the minds of the young, not knowing better because ignorant of Tradition. These dogmas indeed give life and light: They are clarity in the darkness of confusion, water in the desert of ignorance, sustenance on our weary journey. Because of the triumphalism of the modernists, the needed renewal urged by the Second Vatican Council has been derailed. The renewal must be pursued once again.

The thoughtful, balanced, orthodox, and acute analysis of Msgr. Fenton serves as a prime example of the kind of renewal that was and remains desirable, one in organic continuity with the great Tradition, one committed to the unchanging dogmas of the Church, one that is open to new insights and corrections in matters that theologians legitimately dispute. Fenton is also clearly a man of prayer, a theologian on his knees yet one who truly practices the rigorous scientific discipline of dogmatic theology. (Let not “theology on the knees” be used as excuse for woeful heresies, dressed in fanciful and mythical rhetoric. The theological poets have gotten away with heresy because of the ‘beautiful’ way their works seem to read. But what is false is not beautiful but a sham mockery of truth.) This collection of Fenton’s essays is absolutely essential reading for any serious student of ecclesiology. It will serve as a corrective to the countless misbegotten attempts at renewal, all of which suffer from an unwillingness to embrace all the unchanging dogmas of faith. It will also invite a return to that thoughtfulness and nuance which in fact informed pre-conciliar theology, a thoughtfulness open to legitimate development.

Fenton also exhibits the knack of getting to the real heart of the matter. For instance, he laments that too often ecclesiologists present the chief difference between the Catholic Church and other churches and ecclesial communities simply in the fact that the former alone has the “fullness of truth” whereas the latter have only a “portion,” even if a large one, of that truth. Such a difference does exist. Only in the Catholic Church is found, and can ever be found, the “fullness of the truth”. Indeed, so disastrous is the current state of ecclesiology, that many never even mention this difference, binding others to their own blindness (wittingly or no, it matters not, as far as the common good of the Church goes).

Back to Fenton. He rightly stresses that this difference—fullness of saving truth in the Catholic Church alone vs. partial appreciation of saving truth in other communities—is derivative of a much more fundamental difference, namely, that Christ dwells, as in his One Mystical Body, in the Catholic Church alone, not in any other church. That is, the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church is the Only True Church founded by Jesus Christ; no others are this Church. Anyone familiar with post-conciliar theology will recognize that such an insight is almost completely passed over in silence, inevitably distorting the true portrait of the landscape that the theologian has the duty to depict if a true ecumenism is ever to achieve genuine union. Why? True ecumenism aims at the union of all ecclesial bodies in the One True Church. True ecumenism aims at the incorporation into the Catholic Church of any community claiming to be a Christian church. (In a recent essay in the Josephinum, I argue this point out among others.)

I would note also that Fenton’s weaving of Scriptural data in his dogmatic (aka, “systematic”) approach to ecclesiology provides a wonderful model that can be discipled. Due to the excesses of historical criticism, recently revived scholastic practices of theology can tend to shy away from an appropriation of Scriptural data. This is a problem. Fenton, by contrast, reads the Scriptures responsibly, in a manner both reasonable and also indebted to the eyes of faith. Thus, he enables one to appreciate the mystery of the Church in unexpected and edifying ways. For instance, he draws an analogy between the way our Lord is present to the Church today from the very incarnate way He was present to a band of men two millennia ago. This marvelous comparison can be contemplated with perusal of attention and yield considerable fruit. It is neither inimical to nor indebted to historical critical approaches; it transcends them. Indeed, it already anticipates the call of the Second Vatican Council to render Scripture the “soul” of theology. (Again, let not that call be considered a call to make historical criticism the soul of theology. That would be a monstrous misreading.)

Washburn’s presentation of Fenton makes one want to read not only the essays in this volume but Fenton’s other essays and books as well. It is splendid.

Editor's Note: We asked Remnant columnist, Elizabeth Yore, who has covered these Vatican conferences extensively for The Remnant, what she thinks of this latest invitation.  Her response: "Every time I think it can't get any worse, Francis sinks to a new low. Inviting this discredited pro-death charlatan to advise the Vatican exposes the diabolical depths of this Papacy. I have been trying to wake Catholics to the abortion-laden population control agenda at the Pontifical Academy for three years. If this doesn't wake up the pro-life movement to organize against this papacy, nothing will. He is moving at lightening speed at the behest of Soros and the UN because of the emergence of the Brexit and Trump populist movements." MJM

The Vatican will once again be used as a forum to advance population control. Pro-abortion advocate Paul Ehrlich, father of the modern population control movement and author of the 1968 best-seller "The Population Bomb," has been invited to speak at the Vatican during the February 27-March 1 conference that will discuss "how to save the natural world."

This is deplorable when we consider the possible millions of deaths globally that he and his ideas may have indirectly been responsible for over the past five decades. Is the Vatican deliberately seeking to put the unborn to death?

The Stanford biologist, who advocates forced abortion for population control and who champions sex-selective abortion as well as mass forced sterilization as legitimate methods to curb population growth, will present to the Vatican a paper highlighting "Population Numbers" as he discusses "Causes and Pathways of Biodiversity Losses."

Titled Biological Extinction, the conference is being conjointly sponsored by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and is designed to promote the fallacy that the procreation of human life is what poses the major threat to our planet. As they see it, the great enemy of "Mother Earth" is human babies, since they grow up and pollute the planet with their "C02 emissions."

The conference will closely echo the Vatican climate change conference of April 28, 2015, in which several representatives from the U.N. were given a platform to voice their "Sustainable Development Goals" of making the earth a cleaner and safer place through worldwide population control (abortion). The one-day summit, entitled Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity: The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Development, featured key environmental advisers from different countries, including U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki moon and Professor Jeffrey Sachs who are notorious advocates of abortion that operate at the highest levels of the United Nations.

Unfortunately, the pope has made a habit of conferring with scientists and anti-life agents in his plan to make the world a better place. "Science and religion, which offer different approaches to reality, can enter into an intense and productive dialogue with each other," he says in his encyclical on climate change.

What this has done is to give the agents of Antichrist a prominent platform from which to advance their "sustainable" pro-death agenda to the world. The same pope who said that Catholics shouldn't "breed like rabbits" has now opened the door to the Eternal City and has allowed these agents to come in and essentially say this same thing.

Dr. Joachim Schnellnhuber, who famously said in 2009 that the earth's "carrying capacity" is less than 1 billion people and who insists that the earth is overpopulated by at least 6 billion people, was chosen by the Vatican to help present the pope's encyclical at the June 18, 2015, Vatican press conference.

Likewise, Carolyn Woo, CEO and President of "Catholic Relief Services" known for its ongoing funding of abortion and contraception, was chosen by the Vatican to help assist in the release of the encyclical.

Similarly, pro-abortion candidate Bernie Sanders was invited last April to speak at a Vatican conference on social, economic and environmental issues. "I am very excited to have received an invitation from the Vatican to participate in a major conference dealing with how we inject morality into the world's economy," Sanders told reporters.

And of course, U.N. pro-aborts Ban Ki moon and Jeffrey Sachs were given a prime opportunity to plug population control at the Vatican climate change summit in April 2015. Their proposals were endorsed by the Vatican the very next day.

And now, the notorious Paul Ehrlich who initiated this worldwide scare against life forty-nine years ago will be the honored guest speaker at the upcoming Vatican conference on "how to save the natural world" from human infants.

Is this what Francis calls "gradualism?" Little by little, he is getting the church used to devious changes, while at the same time preaching that "resistance" to change that "takes refuge in traditions" is from "the devil."

Or is this latest change being pushed on the pope against his will? Francis, who has been very apt to "exhort" the Church through informal interviews could very well arrange one of these interviews to blast the Vatican's collusion with Ehrlich, if in fact he can't do this from the Chair of Peter. If the pope doesn't do this, what are we to think?

Let us give Pope Francis the benefit of the doubt and pray that he wash his hands of Ehrlich and all that he stands for.

This from a article by canon lawyer Ed Peters, entitled: Conscience can’t be the final arbiter on who gets Communion:

Amoris, never mentioning Canons 915 or 916, seems to think that some process of pastoral “discernment” or “accompaniment” can lead divorced-and-remarried Catholics, even those not committed to a continent relationship as befits all non-married persons, to the point where, having satisfied themselves that they are not sinning, may approach for holy Communion, and the minister, irrespective of the communicant’s objective public status, must distribute it to them.

In other words, Canon 915, the central, historically uncontested, and canonically unambiguous norm controlling ministerial decisions to distribute holy Communion in such cases, is simply ignored.

It is the pervasive and steadfast refusal of nearly all “Amoris supporters” (I dislike the term, but it saves time) to face squarely the ancient tradition behind, and the unambiguous interpretation of, Canon 915 that dooms virtually all defenses of Amoris so far to irrelevance at best and to pastoral and even doctrinal disasters at worst. One cannot coherently discuss reception of holy Communion by divorced-and-remarried Catholics while ignoring the plain text of Canon 915. READ MORE HERE

REMNANT COMMENT: There is no coherent, valid argument being raised in defense of AL’s fatal flaw—that in some cases, marriage is dissoluble and/or public adultery and/or bigamy can be blessed by the Church.  What we have here are lukewarm Catholics who essentially don't give a damn about Christ's teaching and the infallible teachings of the  Church when said teachings conflict with their own personal opinion on the way things ought to be.  Nothing is 'carved in stone,' in other words, and everything must evolve--even Christ.

In lieu of an actual argument, the defenders of Amoris simply WILL this change to the Church's teaching on the indissolubility of marriage to the rejection of the words of Jesus Christ. Why? Because it makes life so much easier when we all surrender to the world, the flesh and the devil.  And, besides, to oppose it would be to become fully Catholic, a transition for which most of them are thoroughly ill-prepared. But make no mistake: They are not missing Cardinal's Burke's point when it comes to the fundamental flaw in Amoris Laetitia... they're simply ignoring it.

The Catholic Church today is teeming with de facto Protestants for whom the Code of Canon Law, the catechisms of the Catholic Church, the infallible teachings of the Church, doctrine, dogma and the reiteration of the constant and magisterial teachings of Popes from Peter to Benedict--mean nothing or can evolve or MUST evolve over time...and, at any rate, are no longer applicable to the modern world and its set of 'sophisticated' modern problems -- problems which even Christ Himself didn't anticipate when He said that "any man who puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery."  His is a 'rigidity' the neo-Catholics are no longer prepared to accept.

The Church, they tell us, failed miserably in the mercy department for 2,013 years, and it is for this reason that Christ the Judgmental must bow to Francis the Merciful. This is nothing short of blasphemy, of course, and yet it is this pernicious non serviam that they actually trot out as an 'argument' in defense of Amoris Laetitia.

The very fact that so many Catholics today refuse to get exercised about the fundamental Moral Order- and Sacraments-destroying nature of AL is in and of itself proof that they've lost the faith (if they ever had it) and that the Church today is suffering from an unprecedented crisis of belief.

Kudos to the magnificent exceptions, such as Mr. Peters, for having the courage to defend the Truth of Jesus Christ Our King in that arena of spiritual and moral chaos that is the modern "Catholic Christian Community".
