Vatican Sex Abuse Summit in Rome

Vatican Sex Abuse Summit in Rome (0)

RTV Covers Vatican Sex Abuse Summit in Rome

Remnant TV was in Rome this past week covering the Vatican’s clerical sexual abuse summit on the “protection of minors”. It seemed a dismal assignment, to be sure, but the reason it was necessary for The Remnant to be in the Eternal City was so we could throw in with our traditional Catholic allies in Rome who’d organized an act of formal resistance to the Vatican sham summit.

Going in, we all knew that the ultimate goal of the summit was to establish child abuse—not rampant homosexuality in the priesthood—as the main cause of a crisis in the Catholic Church which now rivals that of the Protestant Revolt. (Remnant TV coverage of this event as well as the Vatican summit itself, can be found on The Remnant’s YouTube channel, and for your convenience is laid out below:

The Bizarre Case of Catholic Answers Live vs. “Radical Traditionalists”

On May 31st, Catholic Answers Live radio host Patrick Coffin and apologist Tim Staples launched a two-hour attack on “radical traditionalism” which I responded to here. Apparently, the overall response to the show was not favorable. In a July 12th blog post entitled “Meet the Mad-Trads” host Patrick Coffin described the reaction as follows:

We found ourselves on the business end of a nasty backlash. Of all the hot-button issues we’ve tackled head-on with me behind the mic (start the list with abortion, sexual sin, feminism, and homosexuality) no previous topic generated the kind of vitriol from (some) listeners. [1]

NIAGARA, Sept. 8 -- Despite a Southern Poverty Law Center attempt to derail the Fatima Center's "Path to Peace Conference" in Niagara Falls this week, the event went off without a hitch, and, in fact, attendance numbers exceeded the organizers' expectations.

Hello! My name is Tom and I am not a Traditionalist. It's August 31, 2013. My eyes are red and puffy. I have been crying on and off since the end of our family rosary last night. From what I can tell, I will be crying some more in the near future. But the story I have to tell is not a sad one, or at least, it shouldn't be, although for me, my wife, and my 10 children, it is definitely a bitter sweet one.

If anything characterizes this newspaper, it is the Editor’s willingness to buck the tide of public opinion, even Catholic opinion, even traditionalist Catholic opinion.

Putting Catholic Answers back into the spotlight, apologists Tim Staples and Patrick Coffin hosted again the topic of “Radical Traditionalism” during the evening of August 12th. For all intents and purposes, this re-run was damage control, as back in May, the two hosts managed (during their previous same-titled show) to offend every type of Catholic who attends the traditional Mass, whether out of preference or doctrinal conviction.

Although raised Catholic I spent the majority of my high school and college days supporting women’s rights and defending the pro-choice movement. Then I met my husband. On one of our first dates we drove down to Chicago from Milwaukee to shop, eat, and attend mass at the Cathedral.

Somehow the topic of abortion came up and I very clearly stated my opinion of how it is the woman’s right to choose. My future husband looked at me, a bit surprised but obviously angry. My stomach swirled and I glanced out at Lake Michigan behind his frustrated glare. Not only did I fear our short-lived relationship had already ended, but I was trapped in the car with him and we were almost to Chicago. I didn’t think I could face a severely awkward two-hour drive back.

(ROME) On a cold and rainy night here in Rome a fairly sizable gathering of Catholics gathered in the Piazza San Pietro to pray the rosary (in Latin). Led by five or six young priests in cassocks, they knelt on the wet stones of the Piazza and begged Mary's intercession, with a final prayer to St Joseph (this time in Italian). As I was walking back to my hotel when I discovered them kneeling there in the light rain, I filmed them for a moment and then joined them. After all, I suppose that’s exactly where we all need to be during this dark night for the Church...on our knees, praying for the beloved Bride of Christ.

The Sistine Awaits

(ROME) Like the song says—no, there’s really not much news to tell you. The conclave is all set. Tomorrow is the big day. Solemn Mass will be offered at 10 am in St Peter’s by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Cardinal Sodano.

The Sistine Awaits

By:

Over the past fifty years we have witnessed a new and surprising vernacular liturgy (concocted under the supervision of a suspected Mason who was suddenly sacked and sent off to Iran by a horrified Paul VI); a new and surprising “collegiality”; a new and surprising “ecumenism”; a new and surprising “dialogue” and “interreligious dialogue; and even a new and surprising approval of altar girls. The result has been a less than surprising collapse of faith and discipline in the Church. Yet, after a half-century of disorienting novelty in the Church, Dr. Jeff Mirus informs us that we have not had enough in the new and surprising department.  We must allow the “Holy Spirit” to move us in still more “new and surprising ways.”

Trusting Cardinals and Predicting Popes

By Michael J. Matt

(ROME) This morning I went to Mass in St. Peter’s. We’ve been hearing rumors for years that indeed the Traditional Latin Mass is no longer difficult to find on any one of its numerous altars, and even every day; but, naturally, I was eager to confirm this for myself.

I wasn’t inside for more than a moment when I discovered a traditional Mass that had just begun at the prominent Altar of the Transfiguration, wherein rest the mortal remains of Pope Innocent XI.

I knelt down and heard Mass, which the celebrant offered to perfection. After Mass I chatted with him for a moment.  He was filling in for the regular celebrant, but is a diocesan priest from Peoria, Msgr. Soseman, who (I later learned) enjoys a reputation as a learned and holy priest here in Rome.  He couldn’t have been more congenial. Yes, he confirmed, the Traditional Latin Mass is indeed being celebrated every day in the Basilica of St Peter. Who would ever have imagined such a thing! Thank you, Pope Benedict.
