ROME — It is astonishing to witness how the Church, political and media establishment have sought to “squelch discussion” and discredit the recent “Appeal for the Church and the World” as mere “conspiracy theory,” Bishop Schneider has said.

Writing in the prominent German daily, Die Tagespost, on May 14, the auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan, said the reactions and language of critics of the Appeal are reminiscent of life under Soviet Communism, when “dissenters of the prevailing ideology and politics were accused of being complicit in the ‘conspiracy theory’ disseminated by the capitalist West.”

ROME — As Italy and the United States begin to open up in the wake of Covid-19, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has said he believes a widespread disinformation campaign is now underway, and the crisis is providing for some an excellent opportunity to restrict people’s freedoms.

He is therefore urging bishops not to succumb to civil or ecclesial pressure, but to take back their role as leaders and use the authority they have from Christ to provide the Sacraments and the celebration of the Mass to the faithful.

I’ll begin by stating the obvious. When vulnerable people are at risk of harm, most of us would willingly and keenly do our part to protect them. But the question not being addressed at all, is what actions are proportionate to the danger at hand and what course of action will do more harm than good?

Francis being amazing... again 

To celebrate the 50^th Anniversary of Earth Day yesterday, Pope Francis issued a weird sort of papal confession to Pachamama during one of his increasingly bizarre Wednesday Audiences: "We have sinned against the earth,” confessed His Holiness, prompting Christians around the world to lament: Wouldn’t it be great if Francis cared this much about aborted babies?

Understandably, several news agencies rendered this as a kind of blasphemous play on the words of the Our Father: “Pope says nature will not forgive our trespasses.”
