We have all heard by now the Pew study taken back in 2018, which shows that 69% of all self-identified Catholics said that they believe the bread and wine used at Mass are not Jesus, but instead “symbols of the body and blood of Jesus Christ,” —thereby becoming, in effect, Protestants who deny the Eucharistic Truth of the Real Presence. So, I am assuming that the great majority of Catholics go to communion with nary a concern for how they have lived their lives since the last time they went to confession—if they ever do—or if they even really practice, or attempt to practice their Catholic faith, which also accounts for the nonexistent confession lines in so many churches. Do they refuse to sully their souls with sexual license, etc.? But in the same way, a Gallup study states that about 68 percent of Catholic women use a highly effective method of “abortifacient” birth control, meaning hormonal methods like the Pill, the injectable Depo-Provera, and the IUD—or sterilization like the family pet. So, these are most likely the same brand of Catholics who saunter up in the communion line to receive our Lord, like it is some sort of conga line of “everybody is doing it” sort of thing. I mean, what the heck, they are in good company with such “exemplary” Catholics as Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden, and the other politicians who have no concern with how their Catholic faith might be a stumbling block to the wanton murder of the unborn in abortion.

When Fr. Marie-Dominique Molinié, O.P. preached the 1953 retreat (to Dominican nuns) that forms the basis for his recently translated The Courage to Be Afraid, he did not know of the strong winds that would begin to rock the barque of Christ a decade later at Vatican II. It may seem odd, then, to present a short subchapter from that book as holding much of the explanation, and even more of the cure, for the great crisis in the Church today. But God does not change, so a profoundly insightful analysis of the ways in which He tries to bring us back to Him can be far more profitable than any novel ideas about how we should solve the present crisis (which has been caused precisely because the false shepherds have relied upon novel ideas).

It is not by chance that Satan is called a διάβολος, with the double meaning of liar and accuser. Satan lies because he hates the Truth, that is, God in His Essence. He lies because if he were to tell the truth he would reveal his own deceptions. He lies because only by lying can he also be the accuser of our brothers, “he who day and night accuses them before our God” (Ap 12:10). And just as the Most Blessed Virgin, the tabernacle of the Incarnate Word, is advocata nostra, so Satan is our accuser and the one who inspires false testimony against the just.
